Born and raised in Barrow in Furness, Matt Coward-Gibbs moved to York in 2011 to pursue a BA(Hons) in Religious Studies at York St John University. From here, he continued to earn an MA by Research in Religious Studies, focusing on ritual interaction and conflict resolution, this was awarded by the University of Leeds in 2016. In late 2016, under the supervision of Dr Ruth Penfold-Mounce and Professor David Beer, Matt began his PhD in Sociology at the University of York.

Matt’s career has been widespread and varied. Prior to moving to York, Matt was the artistic director of a Youth Theatre company, responsible for the production of large scale musicals. More recently, however, Matt has been the company secretary and administrative manager of the Cambridge Primary Review Trust.

Whilst working on his PhD, Matt continues to work freelance and is currently teaching at both the University of York and York St John University, as well as administrating DaCNet, and actively participating on a number of research dissemination projects.
